Walk into any car lot in Malaysia and you will hear three words: new, recond and used. They are not the same thing, and the difference affects price, loan, insurance and resale.
What is a recond car?
A recond (reconditioned) car is a used car that has been imported, usually from Japan or the United Kingdom, inspected and reconditioned, and then registered in Malaysia for the first time. On paper you become the first Malaysian owner.
Recond cars are imported under an Approved Permit (AP). Most are young, typically a few years old, because import rules favour newer cars.
What is a used car?
A used car (kereta terpakai, second-hand) has already been registered and driven in Malaysia. The registration card (geran) will show the previous owners.
Side-by-side
| Recond | Used (local) | |
|---|---|---|
| Registered in Malaysia before | No | Yes |
| History document | Auction sheet (Japan) | Service record, previous owners |
| Typical age | 1 to 5 years | Any |
| Mileage | Usually low | Varies |
| Loan tenure | Often up to 9 years | Often shorter |
| Spec | Japan/UK spec, often higher trim | Malaysian spec |
| Price | Higher than used, lower than new | Lowest |
Why people choose recond
- Models you cannot buy new here, like the Alphard SC, Harrier Z Leather or Civic Type R at the right price.
- Higher specification: pilot seats, sunroofs and premium audio are common in Japan-market cars.
- Low mileage with proof, thanks to the auction sheet.
- First registration in your name, which helps resale.
What to watch out for
- Always ask for the auction sheet and check it. Our guide shows how to read a Japanese auction sheet.
- Check what the warranty covers and for how long.
- Japan-market cars may need a radio frequency converter and some menus may be in Japanese. Good dealers sort this before handover.
- Budget for road tax and insurance on the full value. See road tax and insurance costs for recond cars.
So which should you buy?
If you want a specific high-spec model, low mileage and a long loan, recond is usually the best value. If your budget is tight and you are happy with an older car, a well-kept used car can make sense.
Either way, compare the monthly instalment, not only the price. Try our loan calculator.

Frequently asked questions
Is a recond car considered a new car?
No. A recond car is a used car imported from overseas, but it has never been registered in Malaysia. You will be its first Malaysian owner, which is why it is often called 'unreg' at the point of sale.
Is a recond car cheaper than a used car?
Usually a recond car costs more than a locally used car of the same model and year because it comes with low mileage, an auction sheet, and first registration in your name. It is often much cheaper than buying the same model new.
Can I get a 9-year loan for a recond car?
Many banks offer up to 9 years for recond cars, subject to the car's age and your profile. Used cars often get shorter tenures and higher rates.
Apa maksud kereta recond?
Kereta recond (reconditioned) ialah kereta terpakai yang diimport dari luar negara, biasanya dari Jepun atau UK, dibaik pulih, dan didaftarkan buat kali pertama di Malaysia.
